City of Long Beach Named 8th Most Walkable City in U.S. The City of Long Beach is the 8th most walkable city in the United States, according to a new national survey. At least 24 Long Beach neighborhoods are ranked in the Walk Score survey, and the top five are: Downtown, Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights, Bixby Knolls and the East Side, each receiving a score of 80 or higher out of 100. A total of 13 neighborhoods are "very walkable," receiving scores of 70 or higher. "The City of Long Beach has many great assets," said Mayor Bob Foster. "Our thriving, walkable neighborhoods are just some of the things that makes Long Beach great." The City of Long Beach beat out Los Angeles (No. 9), San Diego (No. 16) and San Jose (No. 17). Top honors went to San Francisco, with New York and Boston rounding out the top three. Walkable neighborhoods are more vibrant, and offer several health, environmental and community benefits through a reduction in greenhouse gases, increased social interaction and stronger local businesses. Walk Score ranked 2,508 neighborhoods in the 40 largest U.S. cities to help people find a walkable place to live and encourage a "car-lite" lifestyle. Neighborhood walkability is based on the number of nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc. For more information, visit www.walkscore.com |
