First Fridays

Every First Friday of the month the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association and our members stay open late and invite you to explore our shops, enjoy live music, try our excellent restaurants and bars, and of course, see local art.

Vendor policy:

We proudly showcase our business members. Please contact us if you are a paying member of the BKBIA and would like a booth.

Non-members:

In order to get a vendor space for First Fridays, you MUST be a member of our Business Improvement Association. The requirements for that are two-fold. You must first have a brick-and-mortar shop or office located within our district, and two, you must have a business license with the City of Long Beach and pay into our Association.

Our policy and contract with the City of Long Beach does not allow us to accept outside vendors because it creates competition with our paying members as well as congested sidewalks and other issues.

Non-Profit Organizations, Religious, and Political Parties:

While we cannot support any religious or political parties, the First Amendment allows for freedom of speech. If you are a religious or political party, you may find space on the sidewalk on the west side of Atlantic Ave between Burlinghall Dr. and Carson St. If you are a non-profit organization, please contact the BKBIA directly to discuss a potential location to setup. There shall be NO blocking of sidewalks, ADA ramps or access ways, or blocking of any access to a business.

Toaster Music in the Expo Arts Center

toaster music

Musical and curatorial duo Toaster Music is presenting a solo exhibition of new and recent paintings by the self-described calligrafitti artist, Matthew Lee. The opening reception will take place on Friday, March 1, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm inside the North Gallery of the EXPO Arts Center. The event is part of the First Fridays Mardi Gras & Women’s History Month Art Walk presented by the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association.

Lee’s work features a bold writing style that he first developed on the street, and abstracted forms that evoke portraiture, often layered together. His work ranges from monochromatic to colorfully vivid, and from small, intimate pieces to monumental canvases. According to Lee, his work is “a manipulation of traditional forms and street art resulting in a unique, new style reminiscent of cubism, abstract
expressionism, and urban art.”

Lee is a Chinese American, and the son of a fine arts teacher and famous oil painter. He grew up in New York City in the 1980s, and found himself drawn to graffiti, eventually becoming a graffiti writer himself, going by the tag name Duel. Lee served in the United States Marine Corps for 23 years. While stationed overseas he began painting as a form of therapy.

Samples of Lee’s work can be found on Instagram, at 7lineartstudio Artist.

Toaster Music is Sumako, and Sander Roscoe Wolff. They’ve been collaborating on various projects for nearly 10 years, using art, video, music, and dance to activate empty retail spaces, reach under-served communities, and support grass roots community organizations. They’ve been partnering with the BKBIA for more than 6 years, successfully activating 3 spaces during that time. They have an ongoing partnership with the dancers of Maha and Company, led by Cypress College dance professor Maha Afra.

At 7pm, Sander will perform a solo music set with special guest, Felicia Cade, who will be reciting poetry. At 8pm, Sumako will be joined by singer and fashion icon Brittney Jones. Toaster Music will perform at 9pm.

Lee’s exhibition is the 2nd of 9 shows planned for 2019. Other featured artists include Jan Edward Vogels, Margie Darrow Bentovoja, Jessie Santiago, Chris Dunlop, Lisa Hirata, Ricky Sencion, and Michael Bermudez.

The Expo Arts Center is located at 4321 Atlantic Avenue. Additional viewing opportunities are available by appointment. To schedule an appointment, contact Sander.
