Food Insecurity Program
Anonymous donors, who have given $150,000 to the Bixby Knolls Community Foundation for “local support”, seek additional support from individuals, businesses, and organizations to fund the food pantries at Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach and continue the aid for college students facing food insecurity and homelessness.
Every Wednesday for the past year, 80 hot and healthful meals were delivered to needy and deserving students at Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach.
They were prepared by Lola’s Mexican Cuisine, delivered by Alley Cat Deliveries, and paid for by an anonymous donor family in Bixby Knolls.
“During the pandemic we saw what the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association (BKBIA) was doing to support local businesses and we wanted to help — and to support the Association itself,” the donors said.
Soon a gift of $50,000 arrived at the BKBIA, targeted to the 501c3, non-profit Bixby Knolls Community Foundation. The donors chose to remain anonymous, asking only that the gift be used “to help keep restaurants afloat” during the pandemic.
After the initial gift was used to send food to vaccine testing centers, emergency rooms, COVID wards, and homeless facilities, the same donors sent a second $50,000 that helped Long Beach non-profit organizations cover their operating and marketing expenses with the condition that the funds be spent at Bixby Knolls businesses.
These humanitarians then came forward a third time, with funds to help college students who were food insecure and may be experiencing homelessness.
The four-and-a-half minute video shown below represents the donors’ hope to inspire other individuals, businesses, and organizations to take action and get involved by donating funds for meals and other life necessities to help worthy Long Beach students succeed and realize their dreams.
